About the Presenter
Dr. Istvan Rajcan is Professor in the Department of Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Canada. He received his B.Sc. (Agr.) degree from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and his Ph.D. in canola breeding and genetics from the University of Guelph, Canada. Since 1998, he has been leading a large, dynamic and well-funded research program in soybean breeding and genetics at the University of Guelph. His research focuses on seed compositional traits (e.g., modified fatty acids, isoflavones, vitamin E) for food and industrial uses, and exploration of genetic variation for yield and disease resistance traits using exotic germplasm as well as organic soybean breeding. He has collaborated with Canadian, Chinese, U.S. and European scientists. His current private collaborations include the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO), Secan and Huron Commodities Inc. as part of his National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Collaborative Research and Development grant. He has developed 58 soybean cultivars since 1998, which have been grown widely in Ontario and Quebec as well as some European countries. Most of these varieties are conventional soybeans grown for food grade markets. Dr. Rajcan has co-edited one book, authored 4 book chapters and 63 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has graduated 24 Master’s and Ph.D. students and currently advises and co-advises 10 graduate students. Dr. Rajcan is the recipient of several awards including the Presidential Distinguished Professor Award and the Seed of the Year Award for his cultivar OAC Kent. He served as Chair of the Soybean Genetics Committee for two years (2011-2013) and as Vice-Chair and Chair of the Soybean Germplasm Committee (2009-2010). Since 2013, he has been serving on the Continuing Committee for the World Soybean Research Conference. Dr. Rajcan serves on editorial boards of 5 international journals including Theoretical and Applied Genetics, PLOS ONE and Journal of Crop Improvement.
